Nixie tube technology
The nixie tube was invented in 1954 by Burroughs Corporation, U.S.A. It is filled with neon gas, has a thin wire-mesh anode in the front and a sheet metal anode in the back. In between there are ten wires (cathodes) in shape of digits.Contrary to common belief, the light is not caused by glowing wires, but from a high voltage discharge, similar to what you find in a neon lamp. Thus, the temperature rarely exceeds 40 °C (104 °F).
